Pumpkin Scissors Ep.3: For That Is A Precious Thing

Tomboy?
This episode was a mostly melancholy episode, centering on Alice. Her family doesn’t feel comfortable with her, a person of nobility, being in the army. But she tries to preach to them the values of her platoon doing war relief and bridging the gap between the nobles and the impoverished. Her dad gives her a harsh reality check however, pointing out how she as a noble easily gets a hot meal everyday compared to those she’s trying to help. His words strike a chord with her and suddenly she thinks that bringing herself down to the level of the impoverished is the right thing to do, skipping breakfast and traveling on foot to work, resulting in her being late.
The Pumpkin Scissors then set out on their next mission, which involves digging out a rail tunnel the recently collapsed. They get a big drill car as well as hand tools to carry out the mission, and they try to get the local citizens to help out, but the people refuse to help since the last time they helped build the tunnel, they were never paid by the government or the army. Dejected, Alice tries to get the job done by herself, but collapses due to lack of nutrition. She wakes up next to Oland, holding his hand, and she instinctively gives him a slap for no reason. Oland manages to talk her into eating and to understand the situation of the people.
The next morning Alice and Oland march back into town to try to convince the people to help again. They want nothing of it till Alice reveals herself as successor to one of the most powerful noble families in the country, and swears to reimburse the people for their help, even if it means she has to sell off her own family home to do it! The people finally agree to help, but than Oreld comes running in to inform them that the town leader’s kid had driven the drill car right into the tunnel, causing a collapse! Everyone rushes to the tunnel, and Alice and the village leader manage to get inside and shut off the drill, but the exit is blocked and they can’t get out. Just when it looks like there would be another collapse, and just before a huge boulder can crush them, Oland shows up and blows away the boulder with a single shot from his gun. He even managed to blow a hole open for them to escape.
Alls well ends well as the episode ends with the towns people helping out to dig out and rebuild the tunnel. Alice even orders the rest of te platoon to help out against their will.

My Thoughts: Oland went into tank busting mode, but there weren’t any tanks to bust. At least we get to see a bit of Alice’s background, though I still don’t get what triggered her to be all high and mighty to fight the good fight the way she does. Hopefully that gets explained later in the series.
